Cordycepin

Cordycepin, or 3’-deoxyadenosine, is one of the best-known compounds in Cordyceps militaris. Its structure is close to that of adenosine, with a chemical difference that explains its research interest.

Its concentration varies greatly depending on species, strain, substrate, cultivation conditions and extraction process. A stated content is therefore comparable only when the analytical method is clearly defined.

Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleoside naturally present in the human body and in many living organisms. It has numerous biological roles, but its presence in a Cordyceps extract alone does not allow a precise effect in humans to be predicted.

Polysaccharides

Cordyceps contains several polysaccharides, some of which are studied for their interactions with the immune system and metabolism. Their structure depends strongly on the species and extraction method.

Sterols and other compounds

Various sterols, phenolic compounds, peptides and other metabolites are also present. The overall composition is therefore more complex than a single cordycepin measurement.

Militaris and sinensis: identical composition?

No. Cordyceps militaris and Ophiocordyceps sinensis have different chemical profiles. Fermented preparations sold under the name “CS-4” are another distinct case. For this reason, a study using one specific preparation cannot automatically be generalized to every product labeled Cordyceps.

Why extraction matters

Some constituents are more readily extracted in water, while others depend on the process used. A concentrated extract and a whole powder are therefore not equivalent products.

What should you look for on the label?

  • Latin name of the species;
  • powder or extract;
  • part used;
  • extraction ratio when relevant;
  • measured compound content if the manufacturer claims it;
  • analyses and traceability.

Composition does not mean guaranteed benefit

The presence of cordycepin, adenosine or polysaccharides explains why Cordyceps is studied. It does not establish that a supplement will automatically have a measurable effect on energy, immunity or performance.
