How to recognize authentic Shilajit: useful signs and limits of home tests
When people try to identify authentic Shilajit, they often find numerous âhome testsâ online involving water, heat, texture, smell, alcohol or flame. Some may provide clues, but no home test can certify the purity or safety of Shilajit.
This page therefore has a precise purpose: to explain useful observations before purchase or when receiving a product, while distinguishing these clues from genuine laboratory analyses.
The best first test: traceability
Before even opening the jar, check the available information:
- origin of the Shilajit;
- name of the manufacturer or supplier;
- batch number;
- explained purification method;
- certificate of analysis or information on how to obtain it;
- clear composition, with no hidden ingredients.
A product can have a convincing texture and still be poorly documented. Conversely, good traceability allows the product to be linked to actual controls.
1. Observe the texture
Shilajit resin can change with temperature: it generally becomes softer when warm and firmer when cool. This behavior can be consistent with a traditional resin, but it is not proof of authenticity on its own.
2. Observe how it disperses in water
A small amount of resin normally disperses in warm water, producing a more or less intense brown color. Significant residue or unusual separation may justify asking the manufacturer for more information.
Dissolution cannot, however, detect heavy metals, microbiological contaminants or certain forms of adulteration.
3. Smell and taste: clues, not proof
Shilajit generally has a pronounced sensory profile that can be mineral, earthy and bitter. These characteristics vary with origin and purification, so they are useful for spotting an obvious anomaly, not for certifying a product.
4. Check product consistency
The format, composition and commercial claims should make sense together. Be cautious in particular with:
- very broad therapeutic promises;
- a fulvic acid percentage presented as the only proof of quality;
- a prestigious origin that cannot be documented;
- a certificate with no batch number or identifiable laboratory.
Why we no longer use âfire testsâ as proof of purity
Burning or strongly heating a supplement is neither necessary nor sufficiently reliable for assessing its safety. Likewise, alcohol or other solvent tests do not replace an analysis. These methods can create a false sense of certainty.
