Shilajit harvesting and production: from rock to finished product

Before becoming a resin or powder ready for packaging, Shilajit goes through several stages: collection of the raw material, sorting, purification, filtration, concentration and then testing. This article describes that production chain without artificially opposing “artisanal” and “industrial” methods.

Where is raw Shilajit found?

Shilajit appears in various mountainous regions of Asia and other mountain ranges. The organo-mineral material can seep from rock fissures when temperature conditions allow.

Mentioning a prestigious mountain range or altitude is not enough to guarantee quality: what matters is actual traceability of the material and batch.

Collection

Depending on the region and producer, the material is collected manually on or near rock formations. At this stage, Shilajit is raw: it may contain mineral particles, plant debris and other elements from its environment.

Raw Shilajit should not be confused with a finished product ready for consumption.

Sorting and dissolution

An initial step may involve removing coarse material and then placing the substance in solution to separate soluble fractions from unwanted particles. The exact processes vary by manufacturer.

Purification

This is the stage where methods differ most: filtration, settling, traditional processes, use of water, controlled heat or other techniques depending on the manufacturer.

Concentration: resin or powder

After purification, the liquid fraction can be concentrated to form a resin. For certain formulations, it can also be converted into powder for encapsulation or use in other products.

These formats are not enough to establish a hierarchy of quality. A poorly documented resin is not automatically superior to a powder produced through a well-controlled process.

Standardization and reproducibility

Modern processes can make batch-to-batch reproducibility and measurement of certain markers easier. Standardization can be useful, but it does not summarize the entire quality of a Shilajit. A fulvic acid percentage, for example, should be read alongside origin, process and safety analyses.

Testing the finished product

The decisive point is the product that reaches the consumer. Depending on the parameters being assessed, analyses can document certain metals, microbiology or composition, among other things.

Traditional or modern: which is better?

This opposition is too simplistic. Traditional production can be rigorous or poorly controlled; modern production can be highly transparent or insufficiently documented.

More useful criteria are:

  • traceable origin;
  • documented collection and supply chain;
  • explained purification process;
  • finished-product analyses;
  • consistency between the batch sold and the documents presented.

Sustainability and collection conditions

Product quality is not limited to composition. Pressure on certain collection areas, working conditions and the ability to maintain a natural resource over time are also relevant questions to ask suppliers.

In summary

Shilajit production is a chain: collection, raw material, purification, concentration and then testing. Reducing quality to “artisanal” or “industrial” misses the essential point. Transparency of the process and analyses of the final batch are more informative.
