Shilajit is sometimes presented as a “natural nootropic” capable of protecting the brain, improving memory or reducing anxiety. These claims often go further than the available evidence. This page focuses on one specific question: what do we really know about Shilajit in the field of cognition?

Why Shilajit interests brain research

Shilajit contains humic substances, including fulvic acid, along with other organic compounds and minerals. Several experimental studies have examined their antioxidant properties, certain mitochondrial mechanisms and models involving tau proteins.

These avenues explain the scientific interest, but they do not establish that a Shilajit supplement prevents a neurodegenerative disease or “regenerates neurons.”

Fulvic acid and tau proteins

An often-cited publication examined fulvic acid and Shilajit in the context of mechanisms related to tau-protein aggregation. This is mainly a mechanistic and preclinical research avenue.

Cellular energy and the brain

The brain has a high energy demand. Some Shilajit research focuses on mitochondrial function and mechanisms of cellular energy production. This may help explain its traditional association with vitality, but a mitochondrial mechanism is not the same as a clinically demonstrated improvement in memory or concentration.

Shilajit and memory: what do human data show?

Human data specifically on memory and cognition remain limited. Most of the stronger claims found online rely on preclinical studies, proposed mechanisms or extrapolation from traditional use.

Shilajit should therefore not be presented as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, “brain fog” or an anxiety disorder.

What about calm or anxiety?
